A friend eloped last weekend and asked me to take some pics. I put together a little montage of some of the better shots. As always, feel free to let us know what you think.

planeRandom Streaming Thoughts: We’ve got a few treats today. Fred Falke remixing Grizzly Bear, and the Swede wonder Odahl—need we say more? We could be seen rocking these two jams on repeat this morning near Columbus Circle in NYC. We were stopping traffic on Broadway, losing ourselves and dancing in the street. Not really, but we wished we were when we were watching the sunrise while trapped in a bookstore. Why do we refer to ourselves (just one person) in the plural—we, ourselves? Let us (Damn! We did it again) know what you think.

PigeonsWhy I typed the title in all CAPS, I have no idea. Maybe it was a Freudian slip. Maybe it was a sudden case of Napoleon Complex. Either way I have no idea, nor do I care.

So I was shelving books today at my job (yes, there is a job for that). Anyways, the song came on and I was suddenly transported to warmer weather. Needless to say, it’s as cold as a witch’s titty here in NYC and this song did the inner voice in my head some good. Enjoy folks!

Wu vs. The Beatles Mashup

January 30, 2010

NYCstreetThanks to The Heart Attack Club for the heads up on this one. I’m not going to repeat everything they said about it, but the gist is we now have a British Danger mouse in Tom Caruna, a music teacher (well, we repeated it anyways. Damnit!). Let me say, the album is hot. It’s reminds me of how hip hop used to, or should sound—the dirty drums, chopped up samples, and lyrics that actually mean something more than where the next drink, dollar, or piece of ass is coming from (Thanks pop-world-post-millennium, and all you jellybean producers ;-) . To clarify things, we’re not against progression at all. We understand pop culture changes, and in return is reflected in music. But we are against meaningless bullshit. Anyways, enough of our B.S., the album is free to download. Let us know what you think.

It’s about the groove…

January 20, 2010

GroundZero-2For me, what makes a track is the groove. If I can feel my chest twitching, my shoulders bouncing, or my head nodding, then I know I’m onto something. Today’s tracks do just that for me. They groove, they shuffle, and they move. I would venture to say the ’stiffest’ track in the bunch is the reboot track, but give it a listen and let us know what you think. At least give it until the sampled song drops (you’ll know when the guitar and folk singer kick in) and the beat drops back in. That’s where the groove is for us. The rest need no qualifiers. Ciao.

PizzaGuyWhat do you get when 3 neglected children head out to the beach and make a pact to never return? Well, you get The Spill Canvas’ best song, The Tide. A somber tale about the progression of curious adolescence and how reality sets in and transforms the three kids. It’s the classic tale of young man/woman believing in true love and their vision of what it entails, only to have it smashed and washed out to sea by the one person they’d thought they’d found it with. Unable to cope with heartbreak and no support system to rally them back, they decide to give themselves to the one constant love in their life—the ocean. Have a listen!

ModelsIt’s easy to become still and hard living in New York City. Things move at a faster pace, and most people’s emotions are left at home for the cat to chew on. It’s very rare that someone will stop when you fall, or hold the door for you.  I’ll admit, I have definitely moved closer to becoming like this, but every now and then I have to stop myself, take a breather and readjust. On somedays it’s impossible, but others, a random song will pop on my ipod during a shuffle, and it hits. I hate getting all zen on ya, but it’s been that kinda day. Working in customer service sucks. Here’s a few from the past bit…

BrookeyTake a classic, remix, refit, add, subtract, and master. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

This particular Beach Boys song is probably one of my favorite tracks of all time (definitely in my top 3). A year ago, when i first caught wind of this bootleg, I was a bit hesitant to even give it a listen because I like the original so much. But, my curiosity peeled back my hesitancy, and needless to say I hit play within a few seconds. Now, I’m not going to give a mini-review here, just for the sake of not swaying your opinion to either side. So after you give a listen, let us know what you think, and then we’ll join in the conversation with our opinion. If you like, grab it while it’s up. Also, be sure to check out Aeroplane’s other work. These two boys from Belgium have been on fire the past year.

doggies

I touched on how certain songs can dig up sights, sounds, and smells from our past in yesterday’s post. Well, here are a few that do it for me.

It was 1995. I had a new license, a set of keys, a mean CD collection (5 books worth!), and no wheels. I thought I had all the bases covered when I did get my own ride— Pinl floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, Green Day, Dr. Dre. That ride of my own never panned out and I spent the rest of my teens bumming rides. Yes, I was that guy. Well, my friend’s boyfriend, Phil from Orlando, gave me a ride home one night and he put on on Sasha and Digweed’s Renaissance mix CD. The first tracks was Sunscreem’s Perfect Motion (the boy’s own remix). I was blown away and had no idea music could move my insides like that.

We were on our way home from the beach, and as I write this in my shoebox apartment in the-middle-of-winter NYC, I can smell the thick, heavy salt air float across my nose. I am reminded of the the way my arm moved in the wind as I held it out the window and snaked it to the beat, the way my back seat against the seat in the dark, humid air, the glow of the green alpine stereo, and the taste of the juicy fruit, of which I had about 4 pieces stuffed into my mouth. Chomp, chomp, chomp.

Up until that song, and those CD’s I thought of electronic music as patterns. “It sounds the same,” I would say, “Who wants to listen to that shit over and over.” Apparently I did. That next month I started collecting records that I still have to this day. These jams are a few of mys early favorites. Enjoy! And if they take you back, write about when and where in the comments. Peace.
